How to Select a Hammer Union Seal
High-pressure wing unions commonly use a replaceable lip-type seal ring in the female sub. Correct identification is essential because nominal size alone is not enough to confirm compatibility.
Selection checklist
- Confirm nominal union size and figure number, including FIG 602, 1002, 1502, 1505 or other specified design.
- Match the seal profile and anti-extrusion-ring construction to the female sub.
- Choose NBR, HNBR, FKM or another verified compound for the actual fluid, gas and temperature.
- Check standard-service or sour-service requirements and the equipment manufacturer’s maintenance instructions.
Typical applications
Used in flowline and well-service connections for pressure pumping, fracturing, cementing, acidizing, testing and related temporary piping systems when the matching union design calls for this seal style.
The seal or repair kit does not determine the pressure rating of the complete assembly. Confirm the equipment model, figure, connection, working pressure, temperature and service fluid before ordering or installation.
Frequently asked questions
Can seals for FIG 602, 1002 and 1502 be selected by size alone?
No. Figure, nominal size, seal profile and union geometry must all match. Similar outside dimensions do not prove interchangeability.
When should a stainless steel anti-extrusion ring be considered?
It is commonly considered where the specified design and service environment require greater corrosion resistance. The equipment specification and actual media must govern the final choice.
