How to Read an Elastomer Material Test Report
Royal WayMaterial property data can support an oilfield seal or repair-kit review, but it is only useful when the report identifies the exact compound, test method, specimen condition and application context. A generic “NBR” or “FKM” label is not a finished material specification.
What a compound-specific material report should identify
- Compound designation, polymer family and target hardness
- Test method, test condition and report date
- Batch or sample traceability where the project requires it
- Whether a result is a typical development value, a production-control result or a customer-approval test

Commonly specified test methods
Customer specifications commonly call for hardness, tensile and elongation, compression set, fluid immersion and ageing methods. Examples include ASTM D2240 for durometer hardness, ASTM D412 for tensile properties, ASTM D395 for compression set and ASTM D471 for liquid effects on rubber. The applicable revision, specimen type and conditioning must be agreed for the project; this article does not replace the governing standard or customer requirement.
Why polymer family is not enough
Two compounds described as HNBR, FKM or NBR can have different hardness, cure systems, fillers, reinforcement, low-temperature behavior and fluid response. A material report must therefore be read with the actual compound identifier and the seal’s geometry, pressure, temperature, medium and motion.
Information to send for a data-report request
- Product or part reference and required material family, if already specified
- Medium or gas composition, including concentration where relevant
- Continuous and peak temperature, pressure and pressure-release conditions
- Static, reciprocating or rotary application; groove and extrusion-gap details where available
- Requested test methods, acceptance limits and required documentation format
