Oilfield Seal Material Selection: NBR vs HNBR vs FKM

Seal material should be selected from the actual service conditions, not from color, price, or a familiar compound name. NBR, HNBR and FKM can each be appropriate in oilfield equipment, but none is automatically suitable for every fluid, temperature, pressure cycle or sour-service condition.

Start with the operating envelope

Record the equipment model, seal location, medium, minimum and maximum temperature, working and test pressure, pressure cycling, movement, expected service interval and any decompression risk. Confirm whether the seal is static, reciprocating or rotary. Chemical compatibility also depends on concentration, contamination and exposure time.

NBR

NBR is widely used for petroleum oils and many general oilfield sealing duties. It is often a practical baseline when temperature and chemical exposure remain within the verified range of the selected compound. Its limitations can include heat aging, ozone exposure and unsuitable chemical environments. “NBR” alone is not a complete specification: hardness, cure system and compound formulation still matter.

HNBR

HNBR is commonly considered when improved heat, oxidation and mechanical performance are needed relative to a comparable NBR compound. It can be useful in demanding dynamic or higher-temperature service, but compatibility and decompression performance must still be verified for the exact compound. HNBR should not be presented as a universal upgrade without reviewing the equipment and medium.

FKM

FKM is valued for heat and broad chemical resistance in many applications. However, different FKM families behave differently, and some fluids or low-temperature conditions may rule it out. A generic FKM label does not prove suitability for sour gas, rapid gas decompression, steam or a specific chemical package.

Selection checklist

  • Identify the equipment, groove and seal function.
  • List every process and cleaning fluid.
  • Define the full temperature and pressure cycle.
  • Confirm hardness, dimensions, backup-ring arrangement and extrusion clearance.
  • Request compound-specific test data when H₂S, decompression or critical service is involved.
  • Test the assembled system when consequences of failure are significant.
